Community Engagement
Community Garden Resource Network (CGRN)
Part of the Calgary Horticultural Society, the CGRN received 3 years of funding to develop a city-wide program to help support interested gardeners become involved in community gardens and also to help support existing gardens or ones that are in the works. Garden Path is proud to be affiliated with the CGRN, lending volunteers, accepting plants and being on the steering committee to help educate gardeners and create awareness of the importance of growing food locally and organically.
Adopt a Park, City of Calgary
The City of Calgary allows groups the opportunity to steward a park by tending to its watering needs throughout the summer months. As the Garden Path is surrounded by a community park, we are proud to volunteer our time to help maintain the trees and grass that keep families playing and active in their park.
Calgary Lilac Festival
The Calgary Lilac Festival runs along 13 blocks in Calgary's uptown business district the last Sunday in May. Voted “Calgary's Best free festival” for nine years, attendance on a hot spring day can be upwards of 125,000 people strolling 4th Street, known as Calgary's restaurant row. Garden Path participated by manning a colourful booth with veggies and artwork, drawing people into food issues and gardening awareness in urban areas. One artist donated 3 pieces of work to be given as a prize at the booth and greengate Garden Centre donated forget-me-not flower seeds to be handed out as a simple way to spread inspiration to passerbys.
Calgary Kinsmen
The Calgary Kinsmen support charities and non-profits in Calgary in numerous ways. Garden Path sends teams of volunteers to the Calgary Stampede to help the Kinsmen in their greatest fundraiser of the year, selling tickets to the Dream Home and other prizes. The Kinsmen are also available to bring out their power tools to help projects at the garden when needed. Their sister organization, the Stampede Kinettes, graciously donated to the Garden Path as well.
YMCA Kids in Motion
YMCA Kids in Motion is a summer program that engages children from 9-12 in meaningful community projects within their neighborhoods. Children engage in community work which enables them to build team skills and develop a greater understanding of the importance of community and personal involvement. The Garden Path Society provides opportunities for the YMCA Kids in Motion to learn about gardening and help maintain the Inglewood community garden.
Colonel Walker School Plot
Garden Path was excited to have teachers involved in Colonel Walker School's environmental club approach us to renew their free use of a plot at the Garden path in 2008. With grade 4 students mentoring kindergartens in gardening, it is easy to see why gardening is so popular. The kids helped to contribute artwork to be soon displayed at the garden, and they produced fabulous carrots, beets and amazing sunflowers which greeted visitors at the entrance to the garden. To supplement the school's Growing curriculum, the Garden Path hopes to continue to offer the school plot to support hands-on learning for these marvelous green thumbs.
MEOW Foundation Catnip Project
Garden Path procured some catnip seeds from generous donors in the cat-loving community in spring 2008. With a couple of tries after bad weather, over 33 pounds of 'nip were grown, snipped and dried for cats being fostered with the MEOW Foundation. This partnership came from a source that revealed the MEOW catnip source in BC had fallen through, giving us a great opportunity to provide locally produced, organic, fresh catnip to less fortunate furry friends.
Garden Path provides the opportunity for shelters and charities to become involved in growing the food that will be donated to their own kitchen.
